What to Write in a First Anniversary Card

A first anniversary card is a short piece of paper with a job: mark year one in your voice.

You do not need a poem. You need a message someone could not forward to a different couple without it breaking. Below are starters. Copy one, then replace the vague half with a detail only you two know.

What the card has to do

Three beats are enough:

1. A scene or fact from the year.
2. What you noticed about them.
3. A short close. One sentence. Then your name.

If you only have the energy for a text, use beats 2 and 3.

Year one asked more of us than the wedding did. You stayed understandable. I am grateful, and I am still in.

A little funny

One year down. I have notes. Most of them are compliments. A few are about the dishwasher.

For a text, when the card is already in your hand

Card is on the table. The short version: I like our life, and I like you in it.

Happy first anniversary. Read the card later. I meant every line, including the uneven ones.

Wishes that stay specific

General wishes ("health, happiness, forever") slide off. Tie the wish to something you already do.

• I hope the next year has one trip we actually take, and a lot of nights we do not have to perform.

If you are not a writer

Use this fill-in and then delete the labels:

"In [month], we [specific thing]. I still think about how you [habit]. For year two I want [one concrete hope]. Happy first anniversary."

Example, so the shape is obvious:

"In March, we moved the bed under the window and pretended it was a plan. I still think about how you make coffee before you are ready to talk. For year two I want one weekend with the phones in a drawer. Happy first anniversary."

That is a complete card. You can stop.
